Have you noticed that social media has created a lot of new holidays?
For instant #NationalChocolateDay (Of course, I like that one).
or #SiblingsDay (Personally, in my life, that's every day).
I even recently heard of #nationalflannelday. (Not my look, but whatever.)
I could go on and on, but lately I've been thinking about declaring my own holiday:
Why? Because I need it. No seriously, I think we all need it.
I think that sometimes we just all need a day where we let ourselves off the hook.
Obviously I'm not talking about allowing ourselves to commit any big sins---I'm not advocating a day where we break the 10 Commandments or ignore the laws of our society. And I'm certainly not talking about being unkind or cruel to anyone.
Mostly I'm talking about giving ourselves a break and letting ourselves off the hook for all the crazy things that just drive us crazy in our quest to keep up, to be perfect, and impress everyone.
For instance: You didn't have time to get all the dishes done last night?
#GiveYourselfABreak. They'll still be there tomorrow
Didn't cook a made-from-scratch organic meal? Didn't eat one for that matter?
#GiveYourselfABreak Everyone got fed and you can try again tomorrow.
Last year's white shorts didn't quite fit this year?
#GiveYourselfABreak Macy's has new ones on sale for $14. (OK that one actually did happen to me.)
But you get the point----sometimes we just need to let ourselves off the hook--- we need to extend ourselves some mercy.
Doesn't sound very spiritual? Well, I've been thinking about that.
The Bible says:
"Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." Luke 6:36
Doesn't it make sense that every once in a while that mercy should be extended towards ourselves?
Even though I believe that as Christian women our goal should be to be stronger--to be more Christlike---to continually grow and pursue everything we can be in God, I'm also coming to find that this is a great goal 95% of the time. However, sometimes the very small 5% of the time we just need to #GiveOurselvesABreak. We need to let ourselves off the hook. We need to extend ourselves some mercy
The Bible says:
"For He knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust." Psalm 103:14
Perhaps sometimes we need to remember the same thing. And maybe we shouldn't wait for a holiday to be declared.
Instead on those days when we really really need it, we need to have our own #GiveYourselfABreak #ExtendYourselfSomeMercy Day.
What do you think?
